Dieting is the practice of ingesting food in a regulated fashion to achieve or maintain a controlled weight. In most cases dieting is used in combination with physical exercise to lose weight in those who are overweight or obese. Some athletes however aspire to gain weight (usually in the form of muscle). Diets can also be used to maintain a stable body weight.

Diets to promote weight loss are generally divided into four categories: low-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-calorie, and very low calorie. A meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials found no difference between the main diet types (low calorie, low carbohydrate, and low fat), with a 2–4 kilogram weight loss in all studies. At two years all calorie-reduced diet types cause equal weight loss irrespective of the macronutrients emphasized.

The first popular diet was "Banting", named after William Banting. In his 1863 pamphlet Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public he outlined the details of a particular low-carbohydrate, low-calorie diet that had led to his own dramatic weight loss.

A. i say every week... every month is too long cuz then u wont get to see if what ur doing is really working (for ex.) and every day is too little cuz if there are no results u might get discouraged... losing weight takes time so definitely weighing urselves every week is perfect.. oh and when u do weigh urself do it in the morning...thatll give u ur accurate weight.. good luck :)

Q. Do you think that a hundred years from now these extreme dieting pursuits will be viewed in much the same way as the Elizabethan beauty ideals of receding the woman's hairline, Victorian cinching in the waist, so internal organs are damaged or do not function, or the footbinding. These are all beauty standards that endanger the health and functioning of women. Overeating is also a problem but that was not the question.

A. It's mixed up with so many F@cked up things. There is the insidious beauty industry and the mythology associated with selling women and girls an unhealthy but lucrative body image. There is the corruption and control of food and the feeding of the population staple poisons such as trans fats, sugar and white flour. I think we can impact in our own environments by choosing healthy unprocessed foods ( as much as we can afford - yes they are expensive). We can raise awareness of different concepts of consumerism in relation to food and beauty. We can also nurture girls and boys to have a sense of themselves that is not reliant on a sick pop cultur image. - just a few thoughts - thanks good question.

How does one "fix" their metabolism after yo-yo dieting and starving themselves for so long?
Q. Yo-yo dieting and starvation diets leave a lot of people's metabolism (mine included) messed up, since one goes into metabolic "starvation mode" from major calorie cutting. How can a person stuck in this situation get out of it? How can one get their metabolism running correctly after "starving themselves?" Jesus flipping Christ! This section is nothing but goddamn spam!

A. JFC indeed, have just reported the nuisances. If you want to slowly get your body out of starvation mode, start eating plenty of healthy things, like salad and fruit. That way your body will kick start back into its normal metabolic rate, after a while it should be ok to eat normally again without your body absorbing everything that is put into it! Some say small amounts frequently which makes sense to me. Others say 3 well balanced meals a day - also sounds good to me. Choose whatever suits you best.
