The Atkins diet, officially called the Atkins Nutritional Approach, is a low-carbohydrate diet created by Robert Atkins from a research paper he read in the Journal of the American Medical Association published by Gordon Azar and Walter Lyons Bloom. Atkins stated that he used the study to resolve his own overweight condition. He later popularized it in a series of books, starting with Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution in 1972. In his second book, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, he modified or changed parts of the diet but did not alter the original concepts. Atkins franchise, a business formed to provide products to those individuals on the diet, was highly successful because of the popularity of the diet, and is considered the driving entity of the larger "low-carb craze". I recently found out my thyroid is underactive and that is why I have struggled with my weight for so long. Does anyone know if the atkins diet will work with and underactive thyroid? I am already on meds for my thyroid and it seems to be normal at times when they check it and others off a little. I have only had blood work done twice though. Asked by babygirl_0525 - Tue May 2 09:34:24 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I also have an under active thyroid and have tried a low calorie diet, and have lost weight. My aunt does the Atkins diet and she seem to loose weight on it ( and she also has an under active thyroid). I hope it helps. I think once you are stable at a normal level, then you will just have to try a little hard then other to loose the weight. Good Luck. Answered by Talk to me. - Tue May 2 09:38:31 2006 What will happen after I have done the Atkins Diet and go back to a normal, healthy diet? Q. I am going to do the induction phase of the atkins diet (2 weeks) to kick start my weight loss - however, can anyone tell me what will happen when I return to a healthy, low fat diet afterwards? I don't want to put any weight loss back on again. I KNOW the best way is to exercise and eat a healthy diet from the outset, but the above is an option I am considering, I'd appreciate it if anyone who has done similar can tell me of their experiences. Thanks! Asked by Nikki - Thu Apr 16 07:00:14 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have done this exact thing, and as long as you do not over eat you will not put weight back on like they say. I went on atkins to take off a few pounds fast. I lost 7lbs in 2 weeks, and then I went on a 1,300 calorie/day diet. I did not gain weight, I continued to lose weight. However, I used this to help suppress my appetite so that I wouldn't over eat, because I had a bad habit of doing that. Good luck! :) Answered by Nina - Sat Apr 18 00:07:33 2009 How many kilos per week can you lose with the Atkins diet, specially the first 3 weeks?
