Cereals, grains, or cereal grains are grasses (members of the monocot families Poaceae or Gramineae) cultivated for the edible components of their fruit seeds (botanically, a type of fruit called a caryopsis): the endocarp, germ, and bran. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any other type of crop; they are therefore staple crops. In their natural form (as in whole grain), they are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils, and protein. However, when refined by the removal of the bran and germ, the remaining endocarp is mostly carbohydrate and lacks the majority of the other nutrients. In some developing nations, grain in the form of rice, wheat, or maize (in American terminology, corn) constitutes a majority of daily sustenance. In developed nations, cereal consumption is moderate and varied but still substantial. The word cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. GNU Free Documentation License When and how do I start my baby on cereal? Q. When should I start my 4 1/2 month old on baby cereal? He's now half breastmilk (I pump) fed and half formula fed. What age did you start your baby on cereal? And how do I go about starting him on it. What type or brand should I use? He now has 4 oz of breastmilk (or formula) about every 3 hours during the day, 4 hours at night. He's gaining weight just fine on what he's eating now, he's more than 15 pounds. I was by the book, and I started my daughter at 4 months. I fed her according to the instructions on the box. Her fathers family all suggested I put the cereal in her bottle, because it would help her sleep better. My baby slept fine without it. I disagree with putting cereal in a bottle, because baby will soon be eating baby food (6 months) with a spoon, and if it's always in a bottle, they will get a late start on the concept of a spoon. You can also overfeed a baby that way. When you do start him on regular baby food, start with a veggie, and stick with the same food for 4-5 days at a time, before introducing a new one. Just feed her more formula or nurse her more often. Cereal is primarily carbohydrates and digests much faster than milk does which is a protien product so you will be fiddling around with a mess that will not do what you expect it to at all. Solid foods can be introduced at 5-6 months old. Earlier than that and you run the risk of increased allergy problems, especially if it runs in your family. I know. I have a red headed child that I did that to(my first, I didn't know any better) and now she is 36 and swear to God, allergic to everything.
