How do gram stains work and what does alcohol do to lipids?
Q. This is for biology, and the whole question read: "Crystal violet and saffranin are stains that bind to the peptidoglycan layer of a cell wall. Gram's iodine fixes (sticks) the stain to the peptidoglycan. With this information, explain how Gram's stain works." HELP! Thanks in advance.

A. Gram's Stain determines whether bacteria is gram-positive or gram-negative based on both chemical and physical properties of the cell wall. Crystal violet dissociates in aqueous solutions into (CV+) crystal violet and chloride (Cl ) ions. These ions penetrate through the cell wall/membrane. The CV+ ion interacts with negatively charged components of bacterial cells and stains the cells purple. Iodine (I or I3 ) interacts with CV+ and forms large complexes of crystal violet and iodine (CV I) within the inner and outer layers of the cell. When a decolorizer is added, it interacts with the lipids of the cell membrane. A Gram-negative cell will lose its outer membrane and the peptidoglycan layer is left exposed. The CV I complexes… [cont.]

What is the difference between gram molecular mass and gram atomic mass?
Q. Can someone please help me, I'm utterly confused. I thought gram atomic mass was basically molar mass, but it's not. What is it then? Are they expressed in g/mol or just grams? For example, is the gram atomic mass of sulfur 32.07 g/mol or just 32.07 grams?
Asked by that guy - Mon Mar 9 21:23:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The terms are synonyms. But gram atomic mass tends to refer to a single atom, while gram molecular mass tends to refer to a compound.

A. ___Heat of combustion heat / g = (4.18 J/gC * g water * (42.3 - 20.7)C) / (204.03 -203.20)g you need to supply how much water assumption is that ALL heat is transferred to the water; not a good one!

Let me know some names so I can research and figure out what mine is. To narrow it down, it is a rod and I believe it is non-endospore forming. Thanks for your help. How can you tell if a money gram is real or fake?
Q. I got a money gram in the mail from someone. The bank said it was fake and held on to it. They told me that they would let me know in a couple of days after they look at it. If it's good that they'll let me know and I can cash it in. The lady that gave it to me still insists that it's real. They gave me copies of it, before they held onto it. What should I do? How can I find out on my own that these are real from the copies that I only now have?
Asked by God'sStrength - Fri Mar 30 20:03:15 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The bank has the money gram and cannot give it to you until their investigation is done (it's the law, if you take in a fake dollar, they are required to keep it, regardless of your innocence). Even if you somehow prove it real, the bank will not give you the money until they are sure they can collect. Wait for the results (they are protecting you also), then proceed. If you get the cash, and it's found out to be fraud later ( up to a year) you have to pay the money back.

A. Trust me..If you sent it by Money Gram and notified the scammers it HAS been picked up. If by some miracle it has not been picked up contact Western Union immediately and get them to cancel it, you may then get the money back to pay the bank back. Reguardless of if it was picked up or not you are the one who will be responsible for paying back your bank. This is because you are the one who presented the check as valid. The best thing you can do is call your bank up and talk to their fraud department. Perhaps they can get you on a plan to pay it back.

Exactly what is the mechanism of the inhibition of Gram Positive bacterium by bile salts and crystal violet?

Makeup of the cell walls: "Although the cell walls of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria are similar in chemical composition, the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria is a thin layer sandwiched between an outer lipid-containing cell envelope and the inner cell membrane, whereas the gram-positive cell wall is much thicker, lacks the cell envelope, and contains additional substances, such as teichoic acids, polymers composed of glycerol or ribitol. What is the price per ounce or gram of White gold?
Q. I am doing a project in chemistry and have looked everywhere but cannot seem to find the price of white gold. I do not want the price of jewelry with white gold in it. I would just like to know the price of white gold per ounce or gram. Thanks in advance!
Asked by thedollellama - Thu Mar 6 16:40:59 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is impossible to give one answer for the price of white gold. White gold is a mixture of gold with either nickel, palladium or platinum. In addtion the mixtures or amounts of these metals to the gold can vary. If platinum is mixed with the gold the price is higher than pure gold. Nickel and palladium result in less expensive mixtures. On a per carat basis white gold is almost always more expensive than "yellow" gold. Yellow gold in jewelery is usually gold mixed with copper and or zinc.

How much does one gram of aluminum cost?
Q. I need this for a report on Aluminum. What is the cost for one gram (or whatever unit used to measure aluminum) of Aluminum? Example: The element Arsenic costs $3.20 for 1 gram
Asked by King - Sun Dec 2 17:10:53 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. It costs different people different prices. For a Smelter (that is, a person or company that derives it from Bauxite, the ore) is one price. This is the raw bauxite cost, plus the smelting costs, plus a small profit of about 40% nett. He then sells it (at a different price,. say + 50% 'ON-COST'.) to another. The person who buys it from him at the second price melts it, casts it again into different shapes (block, rod, tube..etc.) which he then sells to a third person, the Manufacturer, who makes things like pans, trays, pens, chassis, ornaments, etc, out of the tube, plate, rod, wire, etc... - which he sells on at another price, - again, (say) + 50% "ON-COST". These are sold to Wholesalers or Distributers at another price... … [cont.]
